Klondyke offers a full range of services to clients that provide electrical infrastructure and municipal civil infrastructure.  Typical clients are Electric Utilities, Federal Agencies, and Municipalities, Mining, logistics and transportation firms.

Electrical Transmission and Distribution

Klondyke performs both underground and overhead electrical transmission and distribution projects from 34.5kV up through 230kV throughout the Western U.S.  Klondyke performs all aspects including drilled piers, foundations, erection, conductor and managing SWPP, dust control and environmental protection.

Projects

North Havasu – Franconia, AZ 230kV Line

14 mi. of new 230kV Line from the North Havasu, AZ substation to the Franconia, AZ substation though environmentally sensitive Bureau of Land Management land in rugged northern Arizona terrain.  The route included two crossings over Arizona State Route 85.  Klondyke performed surveying to verify locations, constructed and restored access roads, drilled piers, placed concrete foundations, set, assembled transmission poles, arms and insulators and deadend structures.  Klondyke pulled, sagged and clipped the sock line and conductor using helicopter services to protect environmentally sensitive native plants and species, (desert bighorn sheep and desert tortoise).  Scope included all SWPP, archeological and biological monitoring to protect native plants and endangered species.

Animas River to Durango, CO 115kV Line – Western Area Power Administration

115kV Transmission Line in La Plata County, Colorado from the Animas River Substation to the Durango Substation.  Klondyke furnished all materials, (Steel Poles, Conductor, Fiber and Hardware) and constructed drilled piers, placed concrete foundations, set steel pole structures, pulled, sagged and clipped 115kV OGW and OPGW using Helicopters.
Performed all SWPP, Archeological and Biological Monitoring.

SGS-U3 Expansion – Transmission Line

Switchyard Erection

High Voltage Transmission Line and Switchyard Erection at a coal fired generating station in eastern Arizona.  Included acquisition and installation of materials, as well as, coordinating and installing over $1MM of owner-furnished materials and equipment.  Work included the receipt, erection of 345kV transmission line and steel poles, the receipt and erection of switchyard steel tower supports, the receipt and erection of station power 34.5kV transmission line and wood poles and underground 750MCM conductor, setting, testing and commissioning of 345kV Breaker, CT’s and CCVT’s , installation, labeling, testing and terminating 20,000 lineal feet of control cables and fiber optic communication cables, and new yard lighting installations. Quality was maintained through Klondyke’s QA program that was designed to conform to the client relevant industry accepted standards and specifications.

Riviera – Lipan, AZ Transmission Line Rebuild

69kV rebuild of the Riviera Subtation to Lipan, AZ Substation with a 12kV underbuild.  Scope included pole replacements using both wood and concrete poles, demoed previous structures, drilled piers, placed concrete foundations, set all structures, pulled sagged and clipped 69kv & 12kV conductor and fiber.

Saguaro – Tucson, AZ 115kV Transmission Structure Replacement

Klondyke removed existing 115kV single-circuit wood structure and replaced with double-circuit 230 kV steel poles and wood pole structures.  Klondyke placed the concrete foundations which required 6ft. X 40 ft. and 8 ft. X 40 ft. cased holes with up to 8 ft. reveals, transferred and clipped in conductor.

Shiprock, AZ 345kV Tower Relocation

Klondyke relocated this 345kV lattice tower near a northern Arizona power plant after runoff undermined the foundations.  Klondyke drilled new piers, floated outside phases, installed travelers, relocated the tower to the new foundations, transferred and clipped in the conductor and removed all temporary structures.

Gila Bend, AZ 500kV Tower Relocation

Klondyke relocated and raised this 500kV tower40 ft. to create additional clearance.  Klondyke demoed the existing foundations, drilled new piers, placed new foundations, disassembled the existing lattice tower, and constructed a new lattice base section.  Temporary wood poles were installed to support the outside phases during the move.

Projects

Springerville, AZ Generating Station Evaporation & Effluent Ponds

Construction of two evaporation ponds and one effluent pond at an Eastern Arizona coal generating station.  Project included 189,000 CY of excavation, 1.4MM SF of primary and secondary liner; construction of box culverts and concrete lined ditch and all testing and leak detection.  Subcontractors RUMCO and GSE performed the excavation and lining.  Scope was later increased adding two additional evaporation ponds (additional 185,000 CY of excavation & additional 1.2MM SF of primary and secondary liner), installation 5,500 LF of 8 in.  HDPE Water Line and haul and install of a 2 ft. fly ash cap (75,000 CY) and 40T of rip rap.

Navajo Generating Station Lake Pump Station Build Out

Klondyke installed 5 new 1200 HP submersible pumps and motors at the pumping station.  The project was performed during peak power demand; Klondyke installed the first pump as a back up after one of the existing pumps failed.  Installation required construction of new foundations, steel frame, platforms and hoist to lower pumps.  Klondyke also installed discharge piping, DCS controls, fire protection system, HVAC, cathodic protection system and electrical equipment.  Electrical equipment included removing two 400MV transformers and replacing them with two 13.8kV transformers at the pumping station.  Klondyke then removed the existing 5 pumps and attached foundations.

The Dalles Dam Transformer Replacement

Installation of three new 230kV transformers at The Dalles Powerhouse at The Dalles Dam on the Columbia River.  Klondyke removed and relocated the three existing transformers and installed made all electrical connections, (230kV high side, 15kV Iso Phase, Welding Iso Phase bus).

SGS Unit 4 Treated Make-Up Water Ponds Project

Construction and start up of two 25,000,000 gallon treated make-up water ponds, pump intake structures, supply pumps underground utilities, piping systems, instrumentation and electrical controls for the Unit 3 and Unit 4 cooling towers at coal-fired power plant.  Scope included all testing and assisting client with bringing operation into service.

Civil scope:

  • 70,000 SY of excavation, 61,000 SY of soil cement and 64,700 SY of liner, 200 LF of cased bores, 750 LF of drainage structures (RGRCP & CHDPE), 10,215 LF of access roadway, 500 CY of concrete pump structures and associated foundations including all embeds, sluice gates, access hatch and ladders.

Mechanical scope:

  • Install five vertical pumps and motors (3-4,000 gpm 100 HP and 2 – 1,500 gpm 60 HP), 11,900 LF of HDPE pipe up to 48 inches, carbon steel pipe and all fittings, valves, mechanical devices and instrumentation.

Electrical scope:

  • Duct Bank, Conduit and Raceways, 12kV Feeder drop and Transformer terminations, power, control and communications cable, control building and ground grid.

Navajo Generating Station Crystallizer Pond Upgrade

Expansion of existing Crystallizer pond.  Klondyke removed, transported and disposed of 87,000 CY of existing salt debris, 206,000 of HDPE Liner, removed existing concrete channels and constructed a temporary bypass to continue existing waste flow during construction.  Klondyke excavated and extended existing pond, regarded two additional existing ponds, installed new HDPE liner, two French Drains, pre-fabricated manhole and 250 LF of 36 in. concrete pipe and performed all liner testing and leak detection.

Springerville , AZ Generating Station Coal Stacker and Fly Ash Silo Foundations

Klondyke constructed the foundations for the Unit 4 expansion at this Eastern Arizona coal generating station.  Project included 6,000 CY of structural excavation and backfill and placing 3,000 CY of concrete.

Navajo Generating Station Influent Piping

Klondyke installed 4,300 LF of FRP piping and 2,150 LF of HDPE influent piping and stainless steel piping, pumps and service water and air line at this 2250 MW coal-fired generating station in Northern Arizona.  Projected included 1280 CY of excavation and backfill.

Folsom Dam, CA Substation

Klondyke used a team comprised of its own crews and four subcontractors to complete this turnkey expansion of this energized 230kV switchyard at Folsom Dam in northern California.  The project included installation of over 60 concrete foundations, cable trench, steel structures, CCTV, welded bus, grounding, lighting, conduit and electrical testing.  Klondyke supplied all cable, conduit, bus instrumentation, cabinets, fiber optics and control wire.   Klondyke completed the project on schedule although rock was encountered during the project that was not shown on the geotechnical survey.

Evans Churchill Substation

The Evans Churchill Substation was constructed in 2008 to support several major projects such as the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Arizona State University’s downtown campus in Phoenix, AZ.   Due to the location, the City of Phoenix and the Evans Churchill neighborhood association required the substation to include architectural features that blended the structure in with the neighborhood.  Features such as special paint, balconies, facades and landscaping were used to make the design blend into the architecture of the neighborhood.  Klondyke coordinated its own crew and four subcontractors to perform site development, install concrete foundations, grounding, off site utility improvements and construct the wall features.

Saguaro Solar Plant

1 MW Solar Parabolic Trough and Power Conversion Unit project located near Tucson, AZ.   Project included 294 piers and foundations.  Klondyke performed sitework, grading and drilled piers.  Klondyke crews also placed the concrete foundations for pylons, pipe supports, expansion vessel, cooling tower and control building.  Project included the mechanical and electrical installations at the power block and cooling tower, OEC, transformer, switchgear, hot oil piping and containment vessel.

Emergency and Restoration Work

Westwing Substation

Civil reconstruction resulting from transformer fire at a switchyard that destroyed 5 transformers located in metro Phoenix, AZ.  Klondyke crews responded the next day and began replacing damaged cable trench and conduit to restore power and communications, helping the client restart the substation ahead of schedule.  Project duration covered 3 years and over 38,000 man-hours, with 0 accidents and 0 injuries.  Scope included demoing and reconstructing piers, control house foundations, containment basins, grounding, ductbanks, seven firewalls and re-surfacing.

SGS4- Fire Restoration

Klondyke crews performed emergency restoration work after a fire and explosion destroyed a transformer inside a switchgear room at an eastern Arizona power plant.  Klondyke crews responded and demoed and replaced concrete footings, structural steel, embeds, switching room floor and curbing within three weeks.

Carlotta , AZ Substation – Turnkey

115/22kV turnkey substation located near Globe, AZ.   Work was performed inside an energized substation located on Carlotta Copper Co. mine property.  Both civil and electrical crews completed MSHA training prior to construction start.  Project included site development, drilled piers, equipment foundations, grounding, incoming 115kV High Bay Line structure, 115kV & 22kV conductor, terminations and accessories.   115kv transformer installation and control house installation.  Project also required constructing and dismantling a shoo fly to maintain power during construction.

Drilling and Boring Services

Klondyke offers a full range of drilling and case boring services to the electric power industry.  Klondyke’s drilling capabilities extend to drill to depths up to 46 feet, diameters to 120 inches.  Klondyke has low mast height, excavator mounted drills (LoDril & Watson) that provide clearance for drilling in close proximity to energized services inside substation and near power lines.   Klondyke’s drill fleet also includes smaller carrier mounted drills used for smaller applications such as street lights and direct embed structures.   Klondyke can perform excavations such as drilled piers for foundations for lattice and steel poles, equipment piers, pads and foundations found in substations, switchyards and electrical power generating stations.

Klondyke’s case boring capability includes bores ranging from 24 to 42 inches in diameter using 600,000 pounds of forward thrust to drive casings through the tough soil conditions

Holes up to 120-inch diameter and 46 ft. depth in substations, underneath power lines and around other energized services.
Typically short notice, fast response, quick turnaround projects.  Klondyke furnishes all labor and equipment, obtains required authorizations and permits and secures the sites.

Three 24 inch diameter and one 48 inch diameter case bores totaling 304 LF installed at an eastern Arizona coal-fired generating station.  Project included 1200 cy of excavation as well as furnishing, installing and maintaining sediment control measures of exposed surfaces.

Specialty Construction Services

Horse Mesa Dam Channel Improvements

Channel excavation below an eastern Arizona hydroelectric dam to maintain performance of the hydroelectric pump and turbine, and to improve barge access to the power plant.  Klondyke coordinated three subcontractors to dewater and excavate the plunge pools and excavate and reshape the channel.  Excavation required drilling and blasting and constructing a temporary diversion area.  Desert Bighorn and Coatimundi habitat preservation.  Project was completed in five months.

Palo Verde – North Gila 500kV Transmission Line Clearance Project

Civil and Electrical project to increase clearance of a 500kV transmission line in Yuma County, AZ.  Higher loads reduced sag to unacceptable levels.  Klondyke performed a turnkey project that increased clearance at 21 locations by performing earthwork and relocating one 500kV lattice tower.  Klondyke used all track earthmoving and drilling equipment due to sensitive environmental conditions.

Job Order Contract – Concrete Placement Services

Unit price JOC with a metropolitan municipality (county) in Arizona to provide concrete related services.   Format is a Job Order Contract with Unit Prices.  Contract was awarded in 2005 and renewed for three years in 2007.  Work includes sidewalk repair and installation, traffic signal foundation replacement, repair and replacement of drainage channels and construction of hard crossings.

Valley Metro Rail Streetlight Relocation
 
T&E contract to perform streetlight relocation in right of way as part of the Valley Metro Rail project in Phoenix, AZ.  Work included civil, underground electrical and overhead electrical relocation.  Project spanned the duration of the VMR project from 2005 – 2008.

Electrical Distribution Contract

Multi-year contract for maintenance and replacement of underground electrical distribution system and street lighting for an Arizona utility. This Job Order Contract is broken into two parts and includes 40 unit price categories describing various civil and electrical items of work.  Unit prices included restoration of flatwork concrete and asphalt when encountered. Work performed in municipal Right-of-way and residential neighborhoods requires close coordination with municipal inspectors, HOA’s and other stakeholders to ensure high quality service with minimum disruption.

Emergency Pipeline Repair Services Contract

Multi-year contract to provide on-call emergency repair and construction of underground wet utilities of all kinds. Contract scope included asphalt paving and concrete repair. Individual work order scopes often include the complete removal and replacement of existing surface improvements including landscaping, concrete flatwork, and asphalt paving. Minimizing impact on local residents and businesses is a priority. Work is performed on an emergency basis during normal working hours, after normal working hours, on weekends, at night and on holidays.

Oversized Load Escort Services

Klondyke provides escort services for oversize loads such as transformers, generators and other high loads.  Klondyke can supply the necessary personnel required by law, (linemen, equipment operators, safety personnel, project management) and equipment, (bucket trucks, earthmoving equipment) to raise power lines prepare roadways and provide notification services to utilities located along the route.

Port of Long Beach – Westwing Substation

Klondyke also provided escort services to transport a 380,000 lb. replacement 500kV transformer from the Port of Long Beach, CA to a substation in West Phoenix.  Klondyke provided a crew made up of journeymen linemen, safety personnel and operators who manned a fleet of bucket trucks, crew trucks and wheel loaders to raise power lines and prepare the roadway.

AZ/NM border – AZ/CA Border

Klondyke provided a three person crew with equipment to escort a transformer transport across Arizona.

Douglass , AZ – Maricopa, AZ

Klondyke provided a three person crew with equipment to escort a transformer from port of entry in Douglass, AZ to a substation in Maricopa, AZ.   Klondyke crews also prepared and modified access road to substation.
